Brian Still, MD

I’m a psychiatrist who likes explaining things. Most people leave a first visit understanding their diagnosis and their options better than when they came in, and I think that matters as much as the prescription.

I went to medical school at the University of South Carolina and trained in psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, with rotations across adult, geriatric, child, consult-liaison and emergency psychiatry. I’ve been board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology since 2011.

After residency I worked as a staff psychiatrist in Maine, then ran hospital psychiatry. As Medical Director of Behavioral Health at Trident Medical Center in Charleston, I led the inpatient unit and the crisis team. At Carolina Center for Behavioral Health I set up the withdrawal protocols and the residential, partial-hospital and intensive-outpatient addiction programs. That hospital and addiction work still shapes how I practice: careful with medications, direct about risks, and comfortable with complicated cases.

I founded CAPTA in 2016. Today I see adults by video in 37 states. I also serve as medical director and collaborating psychiatrist for several telehealth groups, so I stay close to current practice and to the realities of treating people remotely.

How I work

• You see me at every visit. There’s no hand-off to someone else after the first appointment.
• First evaluations are unhurried. I usually set aside about an hour.
• I prefer the simplest regimen that works, and I’ll tell you plainly what I’d do in your position.
• Therapy matters. I include psychotherapy in our visits and will help you find ongoing therapy when you need it.
